Photos

They took forever to upload, but here are a few selected pictures from the trip so far. I'm uploading all my photos to Flickr, at www.flickr.com/johndietrick.

The first is the dorm where I'm living... it's one in a row of buildings that look pretty much the same.

A few shots of my room:

A pretty standard lunch, which cost about 6 yuan (~$.90)

And everyone's favorite... the mashed potato dispenser:

There is some pretty weird stuff over here. More to come, but I'm off to breakfast and class!

... and we're finally here

We landed yesterday around 3pm, and got to the university around 5. The flight was pretty uneventful until about 3/4 of the way through when we discovered that all drinks are free on pacific international flights. So we all hung out in the back of the plane and had a pretty good time.

The drive to the university was nice, and we drove right past the Olympic stadium which looks much more imposing in person than on TV or in pictures. I took a bunch of pictures and will try to get them uploaded soon.

Before dinner, we moved into our rooms, although there was a bit of confusion so I actually moved to another room today. I have my own room and my own bathroom, so it's pretty nice. We get hot water for 2 hours three times a day, but the A/C doesn't get turned on until June, so it's just hot. Really hot.

Had some dinner last night, then some of us went down to this little shopping/business area called Wudaokou to hang out. Got back around midnight, and slept alright given the quality of the "bed", which is not much more than a board with a mattress pad on it.

Moved to a different room today, and spent the rest of the time just getting used to campus and picking up some groceries. Food is really cheap and really good here (or at least much better than I expected).

We're about to go out again and maybe check out stuff closer to the center of Beijing, so I'll have to save pictures and stuff for later. More to come...

I'm on the interwebs...

OK, so I don't leave for a few more days, but I'm getting this set up ahead of time.

The url was picked to be simple: goasiago.blogspot.com. The fact that it also could be "go asiago" wasn't intentional, but is fine with me. Asiago is good cheese.

If you're one of those who'd like to receive an email every time I update instead of coming here or watching RSS to check, let me know. I have an option to have new postings mailed to up to ten people. (Mom, you're already one of them :P)
